Swancor Resin helped the Hunutlu Power Plant in Turkey operate normally after the strong earthquake
Release Time: 2023-02-20

On February 6 local time, two earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Turkey within a single day, followed by multiple aftershocks of magnitude 6 or above, causing a large number of houses to collapse. After two strong earthquakes, many power plants in the surrounding areas suffered severe damage and were shut down, causing a local power shortage. The Hunutlu Power Plant in Turkey, which is only 110 kilometers away from the epicenter, felt a strong tremor. Fortunately, thanks to the reliable quality of "Made in China", the Hunutlu Power Plant, which was invested and constructed by Chinese-funded enterprises, has a solid structure and no serious damage to its equipment, and is operating stably. At present, the power plant units are operating stably, providing a safe and stable power guarantee for rescue efforts in the earthquake-stricken area.

The Hunutlu Power Plant is one of the largest direct investment projects by Chinese enterprises in Turkey since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Turkey. It is also a key project for the connection between China's "Belt and Road Initiative" and Turkey's "Middle Corridor" plan, with a total investment of approximately 1.7 billion US dollars. Moreover, it is the first imported coal-fired power equipment invested by Chinese enterprises in Turkey, and the supply rate of Chinese equipment exceeds 90%.

The construction content of this project mainly includes a coal-fired power plant and a dedicated coal terminal, two 660-megawatt ultra-supercritical generating units with a total installed capacity of 1,320 megawatts, and the construction of flue gas desulfurization and denitrification facilities. After completion, the emissions will exceed the EU standards and gas turbine standards. The project adopts the cooling tower smoke exhaust technology (also known as "smoke and tower integration"), which means using the cooling tower to discharge the clean flue gas after desulfurization. After commissioning, it can supply 9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, covering 4-6% of the total electricity supply in Turkey.

In the "integrated flue and tower" technology, a large number of fiberglass reinforced plastic flue ducts are applied. As the main equipment for flue gas transportation, their design, material selection, construction and installation are the key to ensuring the quality of the project. FRP flue ducts mainly consist of two materials: vinyl ester resin and glass fiber. The resin mainly serves as a chemical protection and adhesive, while the glass fiber acts as a reinforcing material to enhance strength performance. The service life of FRP flue ducts can reach 30 years, which is in line with the life cycle of thermal power plants, preventing economic losses and troubles caused by production halts due to pipe replacement. The production unit of this project selected the standard bisphenol A type vinyl ester resin SWANCOR CHEMPULSE 901 of Swancor Advanced Materials as the anti-corrosion material, providing a strong guarantee for the quality and service life of the smoke exhaust equipment of this project.

SWANCOR CHEMPULSE 901 resin is A standard bisphenol A type vinyl ester resin, chemically synthesized from methacrylic acid and bisphenol A epoxy resin. It has excellent chemical resistance, stable performance and relatively good temperature resistance.

The main performance indicators are as follows

The fiberglass reinforced plastic flue of this project has a diameter of 7.5 meters and a length of 260 meters. The overall span of FRP flue ducts is relatively large, and the performance requirements for resins and fibers are very high. Due to the difficulty in transporting large-diameter fiberglass reinforced plastic flue ducts, they can only be wound and fabricated on the construction site, with the construction unit cooperating with the installation on site.
